IDH: ‘Landscape Strategy for Vichada’

The opportunity

The department of Vichada is rich in biodiversity and natural resources, but this potential remains untapped. Vichada’s economy is driven by the social, community, personal services, agriculture, forestry, hunting, and fishing, representing approximately 67% of the regional GDP.

Vichada has untouched ecosystems of great importance as corridors for the dispersal of the silvicultural biota and as a shelter for the fauna of the savannah. One goal at national level is to preserve these ecosystems and promote the conservation of the most vulnerable ecosystems, such as the Bita river basin, a Ramsar Wetland, home to iconic species such as Jaguar, tapir and pink dolphin.

There was an opportunity to support initiatives, that drive to the sustainable development of the Department, increasing the local populations life quality and promoting conservation plans for that region, to remain as preserve as possible.

About FFC

FFC is a sustainable-driven forestry company based in the department of Vichada. The company has been operating in the region for over ten years. Its primary mission is to grow plantation forests responsibly and cost-effectively while positively impacting the communities and the environment where they operate. They also seek to demonstrate global leadership in forestry products by pioneering and developing sustainable forestry in the Orinoquia region, while meeting the increasing global demand for sustainable wood fiber. The company is committed to contributing towards local social, economic, and environmental development within their area of influence and works with the local communities to achieve these goals.

FFC has committed to reduce poverty levels by providing job opportunities and stimulus to local economic activity. They employ about 60% of the local community, increasing the number of local young adults with relevant skills for employment, decent jobs, and entrepreneurship. Its environmental impact goals are to contribute to the reduction of GHG emissions through their plantations, which represent carbon sinks that remove a significant amount of CO2 from the atmosphere. In addition, their primary operational energy provision comes from clean and renewable sources.

How we helped

In its commitment to support the region’s development, FFC competed for a grant to improve technical quality and strengthen environmental and social impacts through the project «Scoping for LDN TAF «Landscape» support.» AMPLO was assigned to support FFC in strengthening its landscape bond, considering the three mainstays of sustainable development: social, environmental, and economic aspects.

AMPLO analyzed the region’s current social, environmental, and economic potential to propose a set of priority areas for the region and identify stakeholders to develop these priorities through a systemic approach, based on two dimensions: Potential for impact and Implementation feasibility.

Then, the alignment of these initiatives with FFC’s priorities was identified and build a high-level business and impact case for each, including the potential role played by FFC. As a result, AMPLO defined possible next steps for developing a Production-Protection-Inclusion compact to impact the region positively.

Expected results

  • FFC will promote socioeconomic and environmental development based on the formulation of 10 initiatives.
  • FFC aims to improve the living conditions of 370 people in Venturosa, Vichada as a result of the implementation of the proposed initiatives
  • FFC will mobilize $ 50 MCOP of investment in environmental and social impact projects in 2021 – 2022.
  • FFC will promote the protection of vulnerable ecosystems that provide ecosystem services, such as Gallery Forests, Morichales, Estuaries, among others have the greatest biodiversity.
